Abul Gheit praises UN-sponsored inter-Syrian Geneva talks

CAIRO - 3 November 2017: Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit met on Friday with United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on the sidelines of the Sir Bani Yas Forum, held in the UAE.

De Mistura posted Abul Gheit on the ongoing preparations for the 8th round of the inter-Syrian talks in Geneva, slated for November 28, AL Spokesman Mahmoud Afifi said in a statement.

Abul Gheit asserted that the AL attaches great importance to the UN-sponsored political settlement, noting that any other efforts to settle the issue are appreciated, but not as consensual as the Geneva talks.

Meanwhile, the AL chief stressed that force is not enough to reach a sustainable settlement of the ongoing conflict in Syria, calling for a national dialogue gathering all parties in the country.
