CAIRO – 2 November 2017: Law enforcement forces of the Second Field Army thwarted an attempt on a security checkpoint in North Sinai on Thursday, killing five militants, according to the Armed Forces’ spokesperson Tamer Refaie.

“Militants attempted to infiltrate into the vicinity of a security checkpoint, but were met with live fire from the stationed forces; resulting in freeing the remaining militants,” the statement said.

This came within the Armed Forces ongoing counter-terrorism operations in North Sinai, aiming to eliminate terrorists and Takfiri elements, and to eradicate their breeding grounds and hotbeds.

North Sinai has been a staging ground for militants operating in Egypt for decades. It is also home to the Islamic State’s Egyptian branch, which has been primarily targeting Christians and security forces in the area.
