Sisi attends ‘Zat al-Sawari’ Naval drills in Alexandria

CAIRO – 19 October 2017: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi arrived at Alexandria’s naval base Thursday to attend the “Zat Al-Sawari” naval drills carried out by the Egyptian navy on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Egyptian Naval Day.

“Zat al-Sawari” maneuvers are meant to raise the capabilities of the naval forces in confronting potential maritime threats.

Sisi will also raise the Egyptian flag on a n

umber of newly joined naval vessels

to officially enter the service.

The French Gowind corvette “Al-Fateh,” which lately joined the Egyptian army, arrived on Wednesday at Alexandria’s naval base along with the German-made Type 209 submarine.

The frigate Al-Fateh carried out its mission upon joining the Egyptian army by shooting live ammunition in the domain of the Alexandria naval base, showcasing an excellent level of competency.

Both additions are scheduled to join in the Egyptian army’s “Zat al-Sawari 2017.”
In December 2016, the Egyptian flag was raised on the first Type 209 submarine received in Kiel, Germany.

The drills will witness many operational activities and data for training in operational tasks, including securing the range of naval forces, transport lines and maritime transport.

On October 21, Egypt celebrates the day one of their warships sunk the Israeli destroyer INS Eilat in 1967. The Egyptian navy became the first in the world to sink a ship using anti-ship missiles; thus commemorating the day henceforth as the Egyptian Naval Day.
