CAIRO – 18 October 2017: Head of the Suez Canal Authority and the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) Mohab Mamish stated on Wednesday that President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi follows the progress of the economic zone on a daily basis.
He said in a phone interview with his TV show Al-Haya Al-Youm that 25,000 Egyptian workers work in the development of the Suez Canal Axis and that there are no foreign workers among them.
Mamish added that Sisi always urges to provide job opportunities to youth in the Suez Canal Special Economic Zone.
Egypt's Suez Canal revenues surged 3.4 percent year-on-year in January-October 2017, Mamish earlier said during his meeting with a delegation from the Parliament's Economic Affairs Committee, headed by parliamentarian Amr Eissa Ghallab.
The canal revenues hit $4.3 billion in January through October 2017, compared to $4.2 billion during the same period a year earlier, he said.
The number of ships transiting the international waterway rose to 2.9 percent year-on-year in the first 10 months of 2017, registering 14,462 ships carrying 859 million tons, up from 14,053 vessels that crossed it in the same period in 2016 with a total cargo of 813 million tons, he noted.
