CAIRO – 15 October 2017: The French Embassy in Cairo praised Egyptian Ambassador Moushira Khattab’s campaign during the elections of UNESCO's director-general post Saturday.
The embassy’s tribute to Khattab was posted on its official Twitter account; a few hours after French candidate Audrey Azoulay won the race.
On Friday, UNESCO's Executive Board has chosen Azoulay, former French culture minister, as the UN agency's new chief. Azoulay narrowly beat Qatar's Hamad bin Abdul Aziz al-Kawari in the final round 30-28 votes; and she earlier won a runoff vote against Khattab as well.
The embassy confirmed that France and Egypt would work together for the future of the UNESCO.
