CAIRO – 8 October 2017: Hamas ended the construction of a buffer zone on the border between the Gaza strip and Sinai as noted in pictures, and asserted by Director-General of the Internal Security Forces in Gaza, Major General Tawfiq Abu Naim.
Hamas began constructing a buffer zone along the border between Gaza and Egypt in June 2017, in an attempt to improve relations with Egypt.
The buffer zone will be a closed military zone constructed within 100 meters inside the Gaza strip, in order to facilitate the surveillance of borders, prevent the smuggling of arms and drugs into Egyptian territories, as well as cut the jihadis off from their Gaza supply route. It is equipped with surveillance cameras and watch towers.
The recent measures followed the recent visit of a Hamas delegation to Egypt on June 4, leading to an agreement to tighten security measures on the borders.
The zone includes barbed wire, CCTV cameras and a control room to monitor the borders. However, a press conference is expected to be held soon to announce all relevant details.
