Egypt is world’s 14th most populous country

CAIRO – 1 October 2017: Egypt is the world’s 14th most populous country, according to the chairman of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), Abu Bakr Al-Gendi.

One third of the population (about 29.5 million people) lives in the Nile Delta governorates, Gendi said, adding that 13.2 million families live in rural areas, which makes up 56% of the population.

“The largest average size of an Egyptian family is four people in the border governorates, while this number relatively shrinks in urban ones," he further added.
Over the past 10 years, population growth has mainly occurred in the governorates of Giza, Sharqia, Qalyubia, Cairo and Dakahlia.

“The Egyptian society is a youth-dominated one,” Gendi announced. Young men aged 15 to 24 make up 18.12% of the population, while 34.5% of the population is aged 15-34.

A conference was held on Saturday to announce the population growth in Egypt for the year 2017. The event was attended by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, members of parliament, representatives of civil society, businessmen, media personnel and officials in charge of the census.

Gendi announced that the population of Egypt reached 104,269,501, both domestically and abroad. Those living inside the country amount to 94.8 million, while expats are estimated to be 9 million, according to the statistics by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

China and India are currently the first and second most populous countries in the world, respectively.
