CAIRO – 28 September 2017: Saudi Ambassador to Egypt Ahmed Kattan said in a Thursday statement that the kingdom’s latest decision regarding allowing women to drive comes within the strategy of enhancing women’s role in the Saudi society.

He added that the Saudi women’s role within the kingdom witnessed huge development during a short period, as they became part of the private and governmental sectors in work taking leading and prominent positions.

“This decision is an important step within the kingdom’s ‘2030 strategy’ which aims to enhance women’s role economically and socially,” Kattan said.

On Tuesday, September 26, King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia issued a decree allowing women to drive cars, ending the conservative Islamic kingdom's status as the only country where that is forbidden.

The royal decree ordered the formation of a ministerial body to give advice within 30 days and then implement the order by June 2018, according to state news agency SPA.
