US state department welcomes allowing Saudi women to drive

WASHINGTON - 27 September 2017: US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Tuesday the US is "happy" with a Saudi move allowing female citizens to drive for the first time in the kingdom.

ABC News quoted Nauert as calling the Saudi decision "a great step in the right direction for the country."

A Supreme Order was issued in Saudi Arabia earlier in the day, allowing women to drive vehicles in the country, taking into consideration the application of the necessary religious controls.
