CAIRO – 11 September 2017: Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta announced that it has restored the account after it had been hacked for two hours, noting that the institution is not responsible for any posts published during that time.

“A while ago, Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta’s official Twitter page was hacked for two hours and the institution managed to restore it; yet what was published on it [during the period it was hacked] has nothing to do with us,” Dar al-Ifta’s post said on the restored page on Monday.

Meanwhile, a state of controversy took hold of social media users regarding posts published during these two hours when the page was hacked, as posts published were evidently inappropriate.

Dar al-Ifta is an Islamic institution that is considered among the pioneering foundations for “fatwa” (religious verdicts) in the Islamic world. It has a religious task of answering any religious question, even those received in different languages. In addition, it trains foreign students studying at Dar al-Ifta, issues various religious statements and conducts researches along with other legal tasks.
