CAIRO – 6 September 2017: Egypt calls on the authorities in Myanmar to promptly adopt necessary measures ending violations against Rohingya Muslims. In addition, they call on them to provide the community with the needed protection, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Wednesday.
The statement condemned the violence committed by authorities against Muslims in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, with thousands others fleeing the country. The ministry expressed Egypt’s support to all regional and international efforts aiming to put an end to the humanitarian crisis and support the community.
The statement mentioned that Egypt is looking for the authorities to concur with efforts by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to effectively resolve this crisis.
Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin discussed the latest developments in Myanmar on the sidelines of a dinner banquet hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping for the leaders of the ninth BRICS summit in Xiamen, China. Sisi and Putin condemned the violence taking place against the minority group, presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef said in a statement on Monday.
The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, denounced the humanitarian violations committed against Rohingya Muslims in Burma, Myanmar as of August 25, in a press conference held on Wednesday.
Rohingya is one of Myanmar's numerous ethnic minorities and are descendants of Arab traders among other groups who have been in the region for multiple generations, BBC reported on January 2017.
The Burmese government denies the group of citizenship and regards their members as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
A million Muslim Rohingya are estimated to live in western Rakhine state, according to the BCC. Over 100,000 people were displaced due to an outbreak of communal violence in the area in 2012.
