CAIRO – 4 September 2017: A series of popular campaigns have been launched to support President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi in the upcoming presidential elections due in 2018. These campaigns announced their coordination with several political parties to establish a unified entity that shall support Sisi in the coming elections.

The National Campaign to support Sisi will hold a meeting for its coordinators in different governorates after the five-day Eid Al-Adha vacation, Bahgat al-Obaidi told Egypt Today on Sunday.

Bahgat, deputy chairman of the Egyptian Community Union in Austria, revealed the first popular conference to the Egyptian expatriates in Europe will be held in late December. “We will take advantage of the Christmas holidays late December when Egyptians will be available to take part in the first popular conference to express their support of President Sisi in the upcoming elections,” Bahgat continued.

“We have faith in Sisi as the most suitable leader for the current stage,” he added.

Bahgat was chosen to lead the national campaign abroad so that he and other regional coordinators should prepare for supporting marches to receive Sisi during his regional and international trips.

The first popular conference inside Egypt will take place in November with participation of several parties such as Nation’s Future Party and Free Egyptians Party, in addition to several prominent figures.

Sisi (62 years old) is the sixth president of the Arab Republic of Egypt. He was elected as the President in 2014 after winning in a landslide victory with more than 97% of the vote.

According to the Egyptian Constitution, Sisi’s four-year term in office ends in June 2018. The Egyptian electoral law allows Sisi to run for a second four-year term.

Egyptian parliamentarians have proposed amendments to the electoral law, seeking to extend the presidential term to six years instead of four. This proposal has not been discussed yet in the Egyptian House of Representatives.
