CAIRO – 2 September 2017: Cairo Criminal Court headed by Judge Mohamed Fahmy starts the retrial of deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi on September 10 by listening to affirmative witnesses numbered 16, 17 and 18, on the charges of taking part in prison breaks and violence against policemen during the 2011 revolution.
The retrial comes after the appellate court overturned the death sentence by Cairo Criminal Court for Morsy, the Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood Mohamed Badia and his deputy Rashad Biomy, Essam Al Erian, the former President of dissolved Egyptian Parliament Saad Al Katatny, and Mohye Hamed.
Morsi and more than 100 other prisoners were sentenced to death in May 2015 after being convicted of colluding with foreign militants - from the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas and Lebanon's Shia Islamist Hezbollah movement to organize a mass prison break, BBC reported in November 2016.
