CAIRO – 31 August 2017: Facebook co-founder, chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday that the Facebook community raised over $ 10 million to help hurricane Harvey victims. Zuckerberg added that Facebook contributed a further $ 1 million.

The web entrepreneur also highlighted that Facebook is launching a similar fundraising campaign to support people during floods in South East Asia.

Zuckerberg, born in 1984, founded Facebook in 2004 at the age of 19. According to Forbes, his net worth is $ 71.4 billion, and he owns 17 percent of Facebook’s stock. He and his wife, Priscilla Chan, pledged to give away 99 percent of their Facebook stake over their lifetimes.

In February 2017, Facebook published the “Build a Global Community” guide that includes five areas of focus for Facebook to contribute to building a global community, These areas include building supportive communities, safe communities, informed communities, civically engaged communities, and inclusive communities. Initiatives such as fund raising for crises and developing disaster maps to track and better understand the humanitarian situation of affected populations by emergencies fall under the social commitment of Facebook.
