CAIRO – 31 August 2017: Palestinian Islamic Fundamentalist organization Hamas announced Thursday, taking steps toward achieving social reconciliation with the Palestine Liberation Organization's political faction Fatah .
”Achieving reconciliation comes within the framework of the Social Reconciliation accord signed in Cairo in 2011, the agreements of the National Islamic Committee for Social Solidarity in the presence of representatives of Hamas and Fatah, and Hamas efforts to achieve unity inside the Palestinian community,” said Abdel Latif Qanou’, Hamas Movement spokesman.
Hamas had released three Palestinian political detainees from Hamas prisons within the framework of the accord, Maged Abou Shamala, member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, told the press on Tuesday.
The Social Reconciliation accord in Cairo 2011 aimed to restore unity among Palestinian political actors after four years of conflict since then. It was inked by the Egyptian authority in 2009, and was accepted by the two parties in May 2011 following Palestinian demonstrations.
About seven previous reconciliation attempts between Fatah and Hamas since 2007 failed, including Fatah-Hamas Doha talks in 2012.
