CAIRO - 29 Aug 2017: UK Ambassador to Egypt John Casson said that cooperation between Al Azhar and universities and research centers in Europe is the way to combat terrorism and extremism and spread the value of tolerance and living together in peace and harmony in an ever-changing world.

This came at a farewell ceremony for Al Azhar students, who received the 2017 Al Azhar-UK Religious Studies Scholarship for postgraduate study in the UK. The ceremony was held at the UK embassy in Cairo.

Speaking at the gathering, Casson welcomed the three Azhar scholars, who received this year's scholarship before heading to the UK.

The scholarship, supported by the Grand Imam of Al Azhar and the Archbishop of Canterbury, aims to promote mutual understanding among a new generation of Muslim and non-Muslim scholars.

The scholarship funds Al Azhar graduates and future leaders to pursue doctoral studies at British Universities with world class standing in theology, comparative religion, philosophy of religion, history of religion and cross-cultural anthropological studies.
