CAIRO - 25 August 2017: Israel’s Ambassador to Egypt David Govrin paid a visit to Cairo Wednesday, along with eight other members of the Israeli delegation for the first time since the end of 2016, according to Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

The embassy staff were removed from Egypt in late 2016 over security issues, while the Israeli ambassador to Cairo and his diplomatic staff worked from Jerusalem.

In recent years, Israel’s diplomatic staff in Egypt has operated from a small building inside the ambassador’s residence in the southern neighborhood of Maadi, under the protection of a heavy security detail.

Observers said that Govrin’s visit to Egypt paved the path to his return. Israeli and Egyptian security forces have been discussing security measures that would enable Govrin and his team to come back to Cairo.
