CAIRO – 21 August 2017: The air forces launched an air operation on Monday and destroyed in airstrikes 9 terrorists’ vehicles loaded with smuggled weapons, ammunition, explosives and prohibited materials while trying to infiltrate into Egypt across the western border with Libya. Monday’s air operation was based on intelligence information and is part of the army’s and border guards’ commitment to secure all strategic borders of the country and to prevent any attempt to infiltrate from any direction.

The air force reconnoitered the western border area during the last 48 hours and identified the locations of the terrorists as well as the armed vehicles and bombed them, following instructions from the General Command of the Armed Forces. The army ground forces are searching the area to arrest any militants who may have fled during the airstrikes.

In conjunction with the air operation in the west, the second army and the air forces managed, in cooperation with security forces, to completely destroy several terrorists’ locations in North Sinai, close to the border area with the Gaza Strip. The bombed locations were used as plots to carry out dangerous terrorist attacks in Egypt and to stash weapons and explosives.

In July, the Defense Ministry announced that the air forces managed to destroy 15 terrorists’ vehicles while attempting to infiltrate into Egypt through Libya. Furthermore, the Defense Ministry announced that the air forces destroyed a car loaded with large quantities of explosive and killed 6 armed terrorists in the mountainous central Sinai.
Army and police forces have been targeted by terrorist militants since 2013. Terrorists consider all army and police forces as enemies of the claimed “Caliphate State.”
