CAIRO – 19 August 2017: A press release issued Saturday by the chairman of the Suez Canal Authority Mohab Mamish, states that 1,453 ships crossed the canal with cargos weighing 87,969,000 tons in July compared to 1,420 ships with cargos weighing 84,474,000 tons in July 2016.
These comprise 365 oil tankers carrying cargos weighing 14,920,000 tons, compared to 335 oil tankers with 14,579,000 tons cargo in the same month last year. In addition, 42 gas carriers with 4,355,000 tons of cargo passed through the Canal compared to 43 gas carriers with 4,630,000 tons of cargo in July 2016.
The ships that navigated the Canal last month included 242 bulk carriers carrying 8,625,000 tons of cargo compared to 252 bulk carriers transporting 8,512,000 tons of goods in July 2016.
Meanwhile, 146 general cargo ships carrying a weight of 1,522,000 tons traversed the Canal compared to 131 general cargo ships carrying a weight of 474,000 tons during the same month last year.
In July, 482 container vessels with 52,979,000 tons of cargos passed through the Canal compared to 478 container vessels with 49,339,000 tons of cargos in July 2016. Furthermore, 78 Ro-RO vessels carrying 4, 298,000 tons of weight crossed the Canal. In July 2017, the same number transited the Canal with cargos weighing 4,822,000 tons.
At the same time, 30 heavy lift vessels sailed through the Canal with cargos weighing 732,000 tons compared to 32 heavy lift vessels with cargos weighing 745,000 tons.
Other types of cargo ships passed through the Canal last month numbering 68 with cargos weighing 613,000 tons compared to 73 ships with cargos weighing 639,000 tons in July 2016.
The average number of ships that sailed daily through Suez Canal in July is 46.9 ships carrying 2.8 million tons of weight on average.
At the same time last year, 45.8 ships traversed the Canal on average daily, carrying cargos weighing 2.7 million tons.
