CAIRO – 2 August 2017: The National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) is considering establishing an independent commission to prevent discrimination against women, according to the council’s head, Mohamed Fayeq, on Monday.

“The council is putting women’s issues and cases as a priority, believing that women’s rights are considered as a factor of knowing a country’s prosperity and development,” Fayeq said during the conference on laws for the protection women.

He added that he appreciates the efforts of the National Council for Women; however, all the entities and organizations need to collaborate for the sake of women’s rights. “There are still too many things that haven’t been achieved yet,” he stated.

Fayeq added during his speech that establishing the commission should be done as soon as possible, as the rest of the laws regarding protecting women from violence should be issued.

Several incidents of violence against women used to take place in Egyptian society during the past period, including sexual harassment, especially during feasts and inside crowded places.

On June 25, seventeen men were arrested in Alexandria for harassing women near cinemas and public parks during the first day of Eid al-Fitr, as another four men were arrested for verbally harassing women in Cairo’s Fustat National Park.

“There are too many issues regarding women that need to be restudied, including sexual harassment, inheritance and descent,” Fayeq said.
