Egypt recovers 13 smuggled antiquities from New York

NEW YORK – 17 April 2026: Egypt has successfully recovered 13 smuggled antiquities dating back to various periods of ancient Egyptian civilization, in cooperation with the New York authorities.

The Egyptian Consulate General in New York received the rare artifacts, which were smuggled out of Egypt illegally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

A formal handover ceremony was held to mark the occasion, underscoring the level of cooperation between the two countries, the ministry said.

 

Egypt expressed its appreciation to the relevant US authorities for their legal and professional efforts that led to the decision to return the artifacts to their country of origin.

The statement added that the move highlights the importance of international responsibility in addressing the illegal trade in cultural property.
