CAIRO – 2 February 2025: The Egyptian and Sudanese foreign ministers held consultations Sunday on field updates in Sudan, and on efforts aimed for the country to resume its membership in the African Union (AU).
Minister Badr Abdelatty pledged that Egypt would continue its efforts to reinstate stability and peace in Sudan out of support to the country's sovereignty, safety, and territorial integrity. He added that Egypt would also continue pushing for enhancing humanitarian response to the crisis.
Minister Abdelatty and Minister Ali Youssef al-Sherif equally conferred over the issue of the Nile water, mainly embodied in the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and Entebbe Agreement, agreeing on consistent collaboration and coordination on the matter, given that Egypt and Sudan are the downstream countries.
The Sudanese army recaptured Wadmadani, the capital of Al Jazeera state, in January, and Sennar, the capital of a state carrying the same name, in November. It also recaptured last month large swaths of Omdurman, a major city located in Al Khartoum State and very close to the Sudanese capital, and has been advancing in the areas surrounding the freed cities.
