CAIRO – 21 January 2025: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Badr Abdelatty and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte exchanged views - over the phone - Monday on the escalating challenges and threats facing the Middle East - mainly those taking place in Syria, Gaza Strip, the Red Sea - and Sahel countries.

Minister Abdelatty briefed Rutte on the efforts deployed by Egypt to establish security and stability in the region, and its contribution to settling crises. Those culminated in achieving a deal on a ceasefire in Gaza, and a hostage-prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas.

The minister also clarified the Egyptian stance on Syria, stressing the importance of preserving its territorial integrity and state institutions as well as launching an inclusive political process.

The Egyptian minister valued the adoption of the NATO action plan for the southern flank during the Washington summit in July 2024. However, he also noted the importance of bilateral cooperation between the alliance and individual countries. In that framework, he expressed interest in bolstering cooperation on human capacity-building, especially in the fields of counterterrorism, and cyber security.
