CAIRO - 18 January 2025: Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Badr Abdel Aati said that "Egypt was the first African country to recognize Senegal," during a press conference with the Senegalese Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs.
On Saturday, January 18, 2025, Dr. Badr Abdel Aati, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, received "Yassine Fall", the Senegalese Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs, in the presence of Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Egyptian Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, where a bilateral discussion session was held between the two sides.
Ambassador Tamim Khalaf, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Minister Abdel Aati congratulated his Senegalese counterpart on the government and its ruling party winning a parliamentary majority. The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed Egypt's pride in the historical and fraternal relations that bind it to Senegal, and in the two countries' convergence of views on regional and international issues, appreciating the coordination between the delegations of the two countries in regional and international forums, especially with regard to defending the interests of the African continent.
He pointed out that this year will witness the two countries celebrating the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, as Egypt was the first country after France to recognize Senegal's independence in 1960, noting the importance of building on the momentum witnessed by bilateral relations, and that it be an incentive to strengthen existing bilateral cooperation frameworks and explore new horizons for cooperation.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs indicated that he discussed with the Senegalese Minister of Foreign Affairs enhancing cooperation, especially in the agricultural sector, saying: "I intend to visit Senegal soon at the head of a delegation of Egyptian companies."
For her part, the Senegalese Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs said that "Egypt is an important partner for us, and the Senegalese in Cairo feel that they are in their country."
The two ministers also exchanged views on the situation in the Sahel and West Africa, developments in the Horn of Africa, developments in Somalia and Sudan, and the issue of Egyptian water security. The two ministers also discussed developments in Gaza, Syria and Libya, and discussed ways to enhance joint African action and regional integration, in addition to files related to the work of the African Union.
