US Secretary of State Blinken thanks Egypt and Qatar for efforts in reaching Gaza agreement

CAIRO – 16 January 2025: US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken thanked on Thursday Egypt and Qatar for their efforts in reaching a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

Blinken noted In a statements, that the Gaza agreement is evidence of the strength of American diplomacy, and that the enemies of the United States have become weaker with the end of US President Joe Biden's term.

He added, that the ceasefire agreement in Gaza expected to be implemented on Sunday, and there are promising prospects for the Middle East region after reaching a ceasefire agreement.

He continued that Biden was able to confront the economic crisis resulting from the COVID-19, and that the US must continue to support Ukraine and weaken Russia.

An agreement has been approved to halt war in Gaza after nearly 15 months of suffering and violence that led to the killing of more than 46,707 Palestinian people with Egyptian, American, and Qatari mediation.

Qatari Prime minister Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani announced in a press conference that the joint efforts between Egypt, Qatar and the United States of America contributed to the success of the discussions and negotiations.

He explained that the deal will come into force on Sunday January 19, and that all details related to the agreement will be discussed and agreed upon during this night.

The Qatari official said that Egypt, Qatar, US to continue meetings in Cairo to monitor ceasefire implementation mechanism in Gaza. He also noted that all parties worked continuously for 411 days to stop the war machine in the Gaza Strip.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al Sisi welcomed reaching the ceasefire agreement in Gaza Strip after ‘hard efforts over more than a year, mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the United States.’

“With this deal, I stress the importance of expediting the entry of urgent humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, to confront the current catastrophic humanitarian situation, without any obstacles, until sustainable peace is achieved through the two-state solution, and for the region to enjoy stability, security and development in a world that is large enough for everyone,” Sisi stated.

He added that “Egypt will always remain faithful to its pledge, supporting a just peace, a loyal partner in achieving it, and a defender of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.”

The approved agreement will be implemented through three different phases according to an Egyptian informed source.

The first stage will be implemented within 42 days, and then the negotiations will be continued regarding the second phase.

The agreement emphasizes the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, the opening of border crossings, and the permission for the movement of residents and the transfer of goods.

The agreement also includes the exchange of detainees and prisoners between the two sides and the return of sustainable calm.

Egypt called on all parties of the international community to support the implementation of the ceasefire deal in Gaza and to coordinate regarding the entry of the largest amount of aid to the Strip immediately after the agreement enters into force.
