Ceasefire agreement reached in Gaza, deal comes into force January 19

CAIRO – 15 January 2025: An agreement has been finally approved to halt war in Gaza with Egyptian, American, and Qatari mediation, after nearly 15 months of suffering and violence that led to the killing of more than 46,707 Palestinian people.

Qatari Prime minister Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani announced in a press conference that the joint efforts between Egypt, Qatar and the United States of America contributed to the success of the discussions and negotiations.

He explained that the deal will come into force on Sunday January 19, and that all details related to the agreement will be discussed and agreed upon during this night.

The Qatari official said that Egypt, Qatar, US to continue meetings in Cairo to monitor ceasefire implementation mechanism in Gaza. He also noted that all parties worked continuously for 411 days to stop the war machine in the Gaza Strip.

According to Egyptian official source, Egypt is preparing to enter the largest amount of aid to the Gaza Strip to support the people of the Strip. Coordination is still ongoing regarding the opening of the Palestinian Rafah crossing for the entry of international aid to improve the situation in the Gaza Strip.

 

Key points of the deal

The approved agreement will be implemented through three different phases according to an Egyptian informed source.

The first stage will be implemented within 42 days, and then the negotiations will be continued regarding the second phase.

The agreement emphasizes the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, the opening of border crossings, and the permission for the movement of residents and the transfer of goods.

The agreement also includes the exchange of detainees and prisoners between the two sides and the return of sustainable calm.

The ceasefire agreement aims to release all Israeli detainees in the Gaza Strip, civilians and soldiers, whether they are alive or not.

The first stage of the agreement includes a temporary halt to Israeli warplanes and reconnaissance flights in Gaza for 10 hours daily.

The first stage of the framework agreement includes the withdrawal of the occupation forces eastward and away from densely populated areas to be stationed on the borders in all areas of the Gaza Strip.

The agreement emphasizes the release of all Israeli detainees in the Gaza Strip in exchange for an agreed number of Palestinian prisoners in the occupation prisons.

The first stage of the agreement includes a temporary halt to military operations by both parties.

On the seventh day of the first stage of the agreement, the occupation forces will withdraw completely from Rashid Street to Salah al-Din Street.

Exchange The detainees are linked to the extent of commitment to the terms of the ceasefire agreement, including the cessation of military operations, the withdrawal of occupation forces, the return of displaced persons, and the entry of aid.

The terms for the exchange of detainees and prisoners in the first phase do not constitute a basis for negotiating the terms for the exchange for the second phase.

Within no more than 16 days, indirect negotiations will begin between the two parties regarding agreement on the terms for implementing the second phase of the agreement.

The United Nations, its agencies, and other organizations will carry out their work to provide humanitarian services in all areas of the Gaza Strip, and this will continue in all phases of the agreement.

The first phase of the agreement, will witness the entry of no less than 60,000 temporary homes, caravans and 200,000 tents will be facilitated.

In the first phase of the agreement, an agreed-upon number of wounded soldiers will be allowed to travel through the Rafah crossing to receive treatment.

Egypt called on all parties of the international community to support the implementation of the ceasefire deal in Gaza and to coordinate regarding the entry of the largest amount of aid to the Strip immediately after the agreement enters into force.

An Egyptian source also stressed that the insistence and pressure of the mediators on the two parties to the conflict was aimed at ending the suffering of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

Egyptian welcome

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al Sisi welcomed reaching the ceasefire agreement in Gaza Strip after ‘hard efforts over more than a year, mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the United States.’

“With this deal, I stress the importance of expediting the entry of urgent humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, to confront the current catastrophic humanitarian situation, without any obstacles, until sustainable peace is achieved through the two-state solution, and for the region to enjoy stability, security and development in a world that is large enough for everyone,” Sisi stated.

 

He added that “Egypt will always remain faithful to its pledge, supporting a just peace, a loyal partner in achieving it, and a defender of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.”

The US President Joe Biden also welcomed the deal saying that, “After many months of intensive diplomacy by the United States, along with Egypt and Qatar, Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire and hostage deal. This deal will halt the fighting in Gaza, surge much needed-humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians, and reunite the hostages with their families after more than 15 months in captivity,”
