CAIRO – 14 January 2025: Lebanese President Michel Aoun has tasked Nawaf Salam with forming the new government. 

 

Salam secured 85 votes following the conclusion of the binding parliamentary consultations, while the outgoing premier Najib Mikati received 9 votes. Additionally, 34 lawmakers refrained from naming a candidate.

 

Salam, who was born in Beirut on December 15, 1953, was elected President of the International Court of Justice in February 2024.

 

Former Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Lebanon to the UN from 2007 to 2017.

 

His name was nominated for the position of Lebanon’s Prime Minister following 2019 protests that led to the resignation of Saad Al Hariri’s government.
