Unpaid care provided by women in Egypt amounts to LE 496B per annum

CAIRO – 12 January 2025: In the launching ceremony of the care economy initiative Sunday, Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsi stated that the value of unpaid care, mostly provided by women for children and elderly in addition to household chores, amounts to LE 496 billion per annum.

The ministry and UN Women conducted a joint study that identified the need for 2.2 million facilities specialized in child care and nurseries over the coming 2-3 years with investments worth LE 18 billion, creating 459,000 job opportunities. In 10 years, there will be nine million investment opportunities in those fields with investments worth LE 283 billion.

As for retirement houses, there will be 18,800 investment opportunities worth LE1.1 billion by 2030; and, 90,000 opportunities worth LE 6 billion by 2050.
