CAIRO – 10 January 2025: On behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Egypt's Ambassador to the United States Motaz Zahran took part in the memorial service and official funeral ceremony of former US President Jimmy Carter, held at the National Cathedral in Washington on Thursday.

President Sisi previously received an official invitation from the family of Carter to participate in the funeral ceremony, assigning Zahran to represent him in the procession.

The funeral procession was attended by US President Joe Biden, President-elect Donald Trump, and former US Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.

A large number of diplomats and current world leaders also participated, as well as other senior officials including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Zahran stated that Egypt's participation in the official funeral procession of Carter is part of the nation’s honoring of the former US president who played a pivotal role in making peace.

The ambassador underlined Carter’s role in promoting human values ​​that are a beacon of cooperation and peace among peoples.

He added that Carter, along with the late President Anwar Sadat, the hero of war and peace, together represented the shining symbol of sincere and diligent work towards achieving peace based on justice.

Zahran emphasized that both late leaders, together left an immortal mark in political and human history.

The ambassador commended Carter's humanitarian work, saying it embodies a high model of cordiality and brotherhood, which immortalizes his memory as one of the most prominent leaders serving humanity.

The words of President Biden and members of the late president's family and close friends came to link the name of Carter with the name of Sadat as pioneers and peacemakers since reaching the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty.

They highlighted the treaty’s steadfastness in the face of challenges over the decades.

Zahran also participated in the ceremony for Carter, which was held on Tuesday at the US Capitol, where participants, including Vice President Kamala Harris, delivered speeches praising Carter’s political and cultural legacy.

They highlighted his historic role in signing the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, which represented a cornerstone in achieving stability in the Middle East region.

Carter, who served for one term from 1977 to 1981, passed away on 29 December at the age of 100.
