CAIRO - 7 January 2025: Dr. Amr Qandil, Deputy Minister of Health and Population, confirmed that the HMPV virus is not new and was discovered more than 20 years ago, noting that it is among the respiratory viruses that appear in winter and infect the upper and lower respiratory tract.

Dr. Amr Qandil, Deputy Minister of Health and Population, said in special statements to Youm7 that the HMPV metapneumovirus is among dozens of respiratory viruses that appear in winter, such as the syncytial virus, influenza, and adenovirus, stressing that treatment is easy and available and there is no need for any concern.

Dr. Amr Qandil, Deputy Minister of Health and Population, added that the Ministry of Health and Population has a highly efficient surveillance system, especially for respiratory viruses, and continued: We have 36 surveillance sites across the republic that monitor all respiratory symptoms, noting that these surveillance sites represent all parts of the republic.

Dr. Amr Kandil, Deputy Minister of Health and Population, explained: Every year, we monitor the activity and infections of viruses and learn about their infection rates through patients’ visits to monitoring sites in the Republic, adding that the prevalence rate of the HMPV virus reaches 2 to 4% of respiratory viruses.
