CAIRO - 29 December 2024: Egypt plans to cultivate 3.1 million feddans (acre) of wheat this season, with an increase in productivity of up to 25 ardab (150 kilograms) per acre, according to Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk on Sunday.

It has been recorded that the average amount of produced wheat in one acre reached 20 ardab in 2023.

The minister added that the state is targeting to increase the productivity to 28 ardab per acre during the coming years, noting that a plan was set to achieve more than 9.5 million tons during the current agricultural season.

The minister of agriculture added during the launch ceremony of the national campaign to promote the wheat crop that the national campaign to combat weeds in the wheat crop will be launched during the new season by the Ministry of Agriculture and for the benefit of the farmers to expand the cultivation of the crop and reduce production costs.

Farouk explained that these approved pesticides will be provided at the expense of the Ministry of Agriculture in agricultural associations, and under the supervision of the Central Administration for Pest Control affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture.

The minister also stressed the importance of the role of agricultural guidance in raising awareness of good practices for  wheat cultivation during the different stages to achieve the highest productivity.

Minister Farouk further highlighted the significance of the Agricultural Research Center's role in developing new strains that are more tolerant to climatic conditions and consume less water, pointing out the need to rationalize water consumption in wheat cultivation by moving towards planting wheat on terraces.

The minister of agriculture pointed out that wheat is provided to farmers in agricultural associations in various governorates as part of the Ministry of Agriculture's efforts to provide subsidized production requirements to farmers and the government's commitment to providing wheat at LE 2,200 for the Ministry of Supply to produce subsidized loaves of bread.

On the sidelines of the national campaign to promote wheat cultivation, Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk honored the farmers who achieved the highest productivity during the last wheat cultivation season, which ranged between 28 and 32 ardebs, in addition to honoring the directors of the research institute and researchers at the Agricultural Research Center.

In April 2024, the ministry succeeded in rationalizing water use in a 10-acre wheat field in the Senbellawein Center, Dakahlia Governorate, by laying out terraces after leveling with lasers, free of charge, using the equipment of the Land Improvement Authority. The productivity recorded more than 25 ardebs, and farmers were given certificates of appreciation, Al Masry Al Youm reported.
