CAIRO – 29 December 2024: Egypt extended its sincere condolences to South Korea over the Jeju Air plane crash southeast of the capital Seoul on Sunday morning, causing the death and injury of dozens.

In a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt expressed its full solidarity with the government and people of South Korea against the backdrop of this horrific incident.

Egypt extended its condolences to the families of the victims, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

A total of 179 people have died as a passenger plane erupted in flames today after skidding off a runway at an airport in South Korea and crashing into a concrete barrier, reportedly due to a failure in its front landing gear.

The plane had 181 people onboard. Emergency responders managed to rescue two crew members, who are conscious and in stable condition.

The Jeju Air flight was landing in Muan town, south of the capital, Seoul. According to the Transport Ministry, the 15-year-old Boeing 737-800 jet was returning from Bangkok when the crash occurred early in the morning.

The South Korean fire agency reported that among the deceased were 84 women, 82 men, and 11 individuals whose genders were not immediately confirmed.

This tragic incident marks the nation’s worst aviation disaster. It comes a few days after the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines flight in Kazakhstan, which killed 38 people with 29 survivors.
