CAIRO – 22 December 2024: Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the UN The United Nations General Assembly Ambassador Osama Abdel Khalek stated Saturday that the General Assembly had re-elected Egypt as member of the Peacebuilding Commission for the 2025-2026 term.
The ambassador noted that the re-election stems from faith in Egypt's outstanding role in peacebuilding endeavors, both regionally and globally, given it took place ahead of a comprehensive review of the UN’s peacebuilding framework in 2025. Hence, Egypt will play a significant role in articulating future peace initiatives and mobilizing sustainable financing for peacebuilding efforts across Africa.
It is noted that Egypt is home to the African Union’s Centre for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development.
The United National General Assembly (UNGA) endorsed in December 2022 the reelection of Egypt as member of the Peacebuilding Commission for 2023 and 2024.
Egypt's Envoy at the United Nations Osama Abdel Khaleq stated that the reelection is the outcome of the voting of the African group in New York. The ambassador noted that the voting reflects the contributions of Egypt to peacebuilding efforts in Africa.
Abdel Khaleq pointed out that Egypt was the commission's chair in 2021, representing Africa, and that President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi had been giving special care to reconstruction and development in post-conflict areas within work at the African Union (AU).
