CAIRO – 20 December 2024: Egypt and Saudi Arabia are exerting tremendous efforts to complete the Egyptian-Saudi electricity interconnection project to start pilot operation and connection to unified network by next summer, according to a statement released by the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity on Friday.

Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat met with his Saudi counterpart Abdulaziz bin Salman in Riyadh to discuss ways to support and enhance cooperation and partnership in the energy fields, open new horizons in the fields of electricity storage and renewable energy, and review developments in the implementation of the electrical interconnection project between the two countries.

The meeting addressed the introduction of electricity storage projects using battery technology to enhance grid stability, meet the increasing demand for energy, and achieve flexibility for the unified grid, the statement added.

Esmat made a field tour during which he inspected several Saudi battery energy storage systems, and listened to a detailed explanation of the current and future storage capacities and their role in stabilizing the grid and electrical supply and ensuring the continuity of the electrical current in light of the trend towards relying on renewable energy.

They agreed on cooperating, supporting and facilitating the implementation of the joint trend to establish energy projects and enhance the electrical infrastructure.
