CAIRO – 2 December 2024:  The UN Security Council announced on Monday holding an emergency and open session regarding the situation in Syria, on Tuesday.

On Sunday, the United States and its allies France, Germany and Britain called for “de-escalation” in Syria and urged in a joint statement for the protection of civilians and infrastructure.

“The current escalation only underscores the urgent need for a Syrian-led political solution to the conflict, in line with UNSCR 2254,” read a statement issued by the US State Department, referencing the 2015 UN resolution that endorsed a peace process in Syria.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that over 14,000 people, including children, had been displaced by the violence in recent days.

“We are deeply concerned about the situation in northwest Syria. Continued attacks over the past three days have killed at least 27 civilians, including children as young as eight,” David Carden said.

He added that ‘civilian infrastructure and civilians are not targets and must be protected under international humanitarian law.’
