CAIRO - 2 December 2024: Israel must withdraw from the Palestinian side of Rafah border crossing, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty said Monday.

At Cairo Ministerial Meeting To Enhance Humanitarian Response in Gaza, Abdel Aaty strongly condemned the illegal legislation banning UNRWA‘s work in the Palestinian Territories. He emphasized that there is no substitute to UNRWA and that it cannot be dispensed with.

The top diplomat highlighted that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is unprecedented due to the ongoing, brutal Israeli aggression that is exacerbated by decades of occupation. Meanwhile, the inability of international organizations and legal system to take deterring steps to stop the Palestinian bloodshed.

The minister underscored that more than 2,000 UNRWA buildings have been destroyed, including 65 of its schools. Further, 85% of the strip area has been evacuated by Israeli military orders, displacing 2 million people and killing than 43,000, mostly women and children.

The aid that gets in after exerting pressure on Israel, which hinders aid in unjustifiable ways, is not commensurate with the massive needs in the strip amid displacement, plagues, the cold, and looming famine.

Further, if little aid gets in it is exposed to looting and vandalism due to the absence of security. Aid workers also find it difficult to do their work because of serious dangers, Abdel Aaty continued.

Some 70% of all aid to Gaza has been Egyptian and Egypt was the first country to establish a camp for the displaced in southern Gaza.

Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Amina Mohamed and delegations of 103 countries, organizations, and financial institutions are attending the conference.

The convention is aimed at garnering clear commitments on providing aid to Gaza, ensuring international backing to the sustainability of aid supply to the Strip, mobilizing immediate aid, and planning an early recovery of the enclave.
