CAIRO – 29 November 2024: The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) reported a 5.2 magnitude earthquake in the Eastern Mediterranean on Friday, with numerous Cairo residents stating they felt the tremors.
The earthquake struck at 9:13 PM local time, near Cyprus and Turkey, and around 710 km away from Cairo, as per NRIAG data.
Various global monitoring services offered differing assessments of the quake's intensity, with Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) registering it as a magnitude 4.8.
Conversely, both NRIAG and the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul recorded the quake as a 5.2 magnitude event.
NRIAG assured that despite local reports of feeling the quake, there have been no indications of damages, casualties, or property loss resulting from the seismic activity.
