Sisi to Abbas: Gaza tragedy unveils int’l failure to stop Palestinian bloodshed

CAIRO - 29 November 2024: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi expressed Egypt’s unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people amid the Israeli aggression in Gaza, stressing that this tragedy reflects the international community's failure to stop the Palestinian bloodshed.

Sisi made the remarks in a message to his Palestinian counterpart, President Mahmoud Abbas, to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, observed by the United Nations on 29 November.

The Egyptian president highlighted the Palestinian people's struggle for their legitimate rights.

He called for reviving the two-state solution to address the conflict's roots based on the international legitimacy resolutions. Sisi urged concerted international efforts to end the occupation and establish an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting the resilience of the Palestinian people, rejecting the liquidation of the Palestinian cause and the displacement of Palestinians.

Moreover, he advocating for a culture of peace and cooperation for regional stability.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) called for the annual observance of 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in 1977.

This day three decades earlier marks the UNGA adoption of the resolution on the partition of Palestine, which recommends the creation of independent but economically linked Arab and Jewish states.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres marked the day, stating in a speech that this year’s commemoration is especially painful amid the tragic situation in Gaza and the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.

Every year on this day, the international community marks the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

“Gaza is in ruins, more than 43,000 Palestinians – mostly women and children – have been reportedly killed, and the humanitarian crisis is getting worse by the day.  This is appalling and inexcusable,” Guterres said.

He also slammed the Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as well as settlement expansion, evictions, demolitions, settler violence and threats of annexation.

Guterres appealed for full support of lifesaving humanitarian relief for the Palestinian people – in particular through the work of UNRWA, emphasizing that the agency represents “an irreplaceable lifeline for millions of Palestinians.”
