CAIRO – 28 November 2024: Tackling the effectiveness of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) in dealing with security challenges in Africa, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Badr Abdelatty highlighted the increase of membership suspension in the African Union (AU), arguing that sanctions do not always resolve problems; rather, they may amplify violence and peoples' suffering.
The minister made the statements while attending the online meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council Thursday, as he called for adopting strategies that are more focused on strengthening state institutions and supporting countries during transitional phases.
The Egyptian minister also demanded boosting the AU capabilities in response to post-conflict crises, peacebuilding, and development. Moreover, he called for restructuring the PSC for a just presentation of North Africa by making its seats three up from two, shedding light on that region's role in achieving independence from colonization on the continental scale.
The council consists of 15 seats. The breakdown is four for Western Africa, three for each of Eastern Africa, Central Africa and Southern Africa, and two for North Africa.
The minister noted that the African continent had been facing unprecedented challenges that jeopardize its ability to accomplish 2063 Agenda goals. Hence, he stressed the importance of abiding by the foundational principles of the African Union, including respect to the states' sovereignty, territorial integrity, and not interfering with their internal affairs.
