European support is also needed for further recognition of the Palestinian state, Loh said during a meeting with EU Ambassador to Egypt Angelina Eichhorst Monday.

Loh said an international peace conference should be held with the aim to implement the two-state solution based on international legitimacy and law.

The Israeli occupation should end and a Palestinian state should be established with East Jerusalem as its capital, the diplomat said.

The meeting also took up the latest political and field developments in Palestine, as well as efforts to end the genocide in the Gaza Strip and deliver urgent humanitarian aid to Gazans.

Loh greatly appreciated EU calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and the bloc's stance against the displacement of Palestinians in Gaza. He also thanked the EU for condemning an attempt to terminate the 1967 agreement between Israel and the UNRWA. To the contrary, the EU has been urging quick delivery of aid to the besieged enclave.

The Palestinian diplomat also praised EU moves to halt a dialogue about a partnership agreement with Israel on the back of the war in Gaza. The EU also called for imposing sanctions on Israeli settlers, Loh said.

The EU, together with friendly countries at the UN General Assembly, has backed a Palestinian request to endorse an advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), determining that the Palestinian territories constitute one political unit and that Israel's occupation since 1967, and the subsequent creation of Israeli settlements and exploitation of natural resources, are illegal under international law.

All countries should immediately act to implement this resolution and legal ruling by the ICJ, Loh urged.

Eichhorst, for her part, reiterated EU support for the political course that leads to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
