CAIRO - 21 November 2024: Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdel Aty held a phone conversation on Thursday with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss pressing regional developments, particularly the escalating crises in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

During the call, Abdel Aty expressed Egypt's deep concern over the ongoing escalation in the region, emphasizing the critical need to de-escalate tensions and exercise restraint during this delicate phase.

He stressed the importance of reaching an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon, highlighting Egypt’s ongoing diplomatic efforts with key regional and international players to reduce tensions. Abdel Aty reiterated Egypt’s commitment to supporting Lebanon politically and humanitarianly, underlining the shared bond between the two nations.

The conversation also delved into Lebanon’s prolonged presidential vacancy. Abdel Aty called for collective support to help Lebanon overcome this crisis by achieving national consensus on electing a president without external interference. He underscored the necessity of empowering Lebanese institutions, particularly the Lebanese Armed Forces, and fully implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to maintain peace and stability.

Regarding Gaza, Abdel Aty emphasized the urgency of securing a ceasefire in the territory, describing it as a crucial step to halting the broader escalation in the region. He warned that Israel’s continued aggression in Gaza risks expanding the conflict, which could further destabilize the region. Abdel Aty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to mitigating the crisis through sustained diplomatic engagement and support for the Palestinian people.

The call reflects Egypt’s active role in addressing regional crises, advocating for peaceful resolutions, and fostering stability amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
