CAIRO – 21 November 2024: The new board of Ataa Fund – specialized in supporting disabled individuals - presented in a meeting with Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsi the accomplishments achieved in the past period.
The number of disabled beneficiaries amounted to 13,000. Also, 28 projects were carried out in partnership with 18 institutions and 152 associations. The top governorates, in terms of service recipients, are Upper Egypt's Asyut and Sohag.
The fund granted 2,345 assistive devices that included white canes, computers for the visually-impaired, cochlear implants, prostheses, and wheelchairs. Further, 80 schools were equipped to accommodate disabled children, introducing 56 resource rooms and training 751 teachers. Those schools received 746 students with visual and hearing impairment, autism, mental disabilities, and learning difficulties. The attendance rate of visually-impaired students rose from 50 percent to 90 percent.
Similarly, the attendance rate of 503 students with mobility issues at the universities of Ain Shams, Zagazig, and Menoufeya increased by 75 percent, as they were granted wheelchairs, while mobility accommodations were introduced in campuses.
Speaking of rural areas, a rehabilitation center was established in each of 65 villages, delivering their services to a total of 300 villages. The number of service recipients hit until present 9,700. Regarding children, precisely, their speaking and mobility skills developed by 40 percent after completing the suitable rehabilitation programmes.
In respect of economic empowerment, 134 micro and small projects were funded in addition to delivering training to 341 disabled individuals. Ataa, that began operating in 2020, is the only of its kind in Egypt.
