CAIRO – 20 November 2024: Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy assumes his new position on Wednesday, as the official spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency, taking over from Ambassador Ahmed Fahmy.
Fahmy has been appointed as Egypt's Ambassador to Hungary after serving nearly two years as presidential spokesman.
Shenawy had been the ambassador to Hungary since 2021 after serving as the deputy assistant of foreign minister for the minister’s office affairs.
Throughout his extensive diplomatic career, Shenawy participated in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meetings from 2007 to 2019 and as a member of the Egyptian delegation in negotiations regarding the demarcation of maritime boundaries between Egypt and Greece.
He also contributed to Egypt's campaign for a non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council for the years 2016/2017, and was in charge of Egypt's chairmanship of the Counter-Terrorism Committee at the Security Council.
Moreover, Shenawy represented Egypt as an expert in the UNGA committees on legal affairs, financial and administrative matters, and UN peacekeeping and peacebuilding operations, as well as in negotiations related to the expansion and reform of the Security Council.
Throughout his career, he participated in numerous international meetings and was a member of several national committees.
The new presidential spokesman commenced his career as a deputy to the prosecutor-general before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1995 as part of the international legal affairs and treaties department.
He later worked at the Egyptian Embassy in The Hague, then at the foreign minister’s office upon his return to Cairo.
Subsequently, he served at Egypt's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, then at the foreign minister’s office in Cairo, before rejoining the permanent mission as part of the team representing Egypt during its membership in the Security Council.
Shenawy obtained a Bachelor of Laws from Cairo University and a Master's degree in International Law from the University of London.
