CAIRO - 19 November 2024: The joint statement of the G20 summit called on its leaders in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s ancient capital, to welcome “constructive initiatives” to achieve peace in Ukraine.

The joint statement of the G20 summit stressed the call for a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine, as well as ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon.

The joint statement of the G20 summit stressed the urgent need to increase the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza and Lebanon.

Brazil called for coordinated action to alleviate hunger on Monday as it hosted a summit of the Group of 20 leading economies amid global uncertainty over two major wars and US President-elect Donald Trump.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva welcomed foreign leaders to the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro on Monday morning and gave an opening speech focused on combating food insecurity.

“Those of us here, around this table, must face the irreplaceable task of ending this stain that shames humanity,” Lula told his colleagues. ‘This will be our greatest legacy.’

Rising global tensions and uncertainty about the incoming Trump administration ahead of the summit had already dampened expectations for a tough statement addressing conflicts in the Middle East and between Russia and Ukraine, and further clouding the prospects for a consensus, Argentine negotiators have challenged some of the draft’s wording.

That has experts predicting a final document that will focus on social issues such as ending hunger — a priority for Brazil.
