CAIRO - 18 November 2024: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in his capacity as the African Union (AU) Champion for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD), issued a statement marking the launch of the fourth edition of the AU Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development Awareness Week.
The event, taking place from November 18 to 24, 2024, is themed “Strategies and Pathways for Effective Implementation of the AU Policy on Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development.”
President Sisi emphasized that Africa faces intertwined security and developmental challenges requiring a focus on addressing the root causes of conflicts. This includes enhancing the capacities of national, regional, and continental institutions to bolster resilience against complex internal and external threats.
He stressed the importance of sustainable solutions to ongoing crises, fostering peace, and preventing communities from sliding back into cycles of violence.
Highlighting the outcomes of the 4th Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development held in Cairo in July 2024, Sisi outlined major initiatives aimed at enhancing African ownership of peace, security, and development efforts. These include:
Launching the African Network for Preventing Extremism Leading to Terrorism.
Introducing the Aswan Forum Award for Reconstruction and Development to recognize successful peacebuilding projects across the continent.
President Sisi underscored the adoption of a revised AU PCRD policy during the AU Summit in February 2024, which outlines an integrated African strategy for preventing conflicts and sustaining peace. The focus now shifts to the policy’s activation through:
Raising awareness during the Reconstruction Week.Developing practical guidelines for implementing the policy.
Operationalizing the AU Center for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development, headquartered in Cairo, to design initiatives supporting post-conflict nations and those in transitional phases.
The Egyptian leader emphasized the need for close collaboration with regional and international partners to mobilize the resources necessary for implementing PCRD projects. He commended the AU Commission’s efforts to support reconstruction and peacebuilding across the continent.
Sisi reaffirmed his dedication to coordinating with African leaders, the AU Commission, regional stakeholders, and international partners to meet the aspirations of the African people. These efforts align with the broader goals of Agenda 2063, the AU’s blueprint for the continent’s future.
