CAIRO – 18 November 2024: The Egyptian and Brazilian presidents launched Monday a strategic partnership between the two countries during the former's visit to Rio De Janeiro to attend the G20 Summit.

The joint statement cited the following seven reasons behind the decision:

  1. Commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and international law.
  2. Desire to strengthen diplomatic ties, and increase exchange of visits among officials of both countries in various sectors.
  3. Desire to focus on reciprocating interests in regard of socioeconomic development needs.
  4. Desire to expand consultations and coordination on regional and international affairs of joint interest.
  5. Eagerness for reinforcing multilaterism on the international community level, and reforming the structure of the global financial system and the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, making those bodies more representative, legitimate, effective, and reflective of the reality of the 21st century.
  6. Keenness on intensifying cooperation in the fields of politics, diplomacy, peace, security, defense, economics, trade, investment, environment, agriculture, scientific research, education, development, culture, sports, and tourism.
  7. Desire to set a plan, through diplomatic channels, to design the initiatives needed to execute the strategic partnership. The plan may be periodically revisited to update it as needed in a way that responds to the dynamics of the bilateral relations.

The strategic partnership is announced in tandem with the 100th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between Egypt and Brazil, and the former's recent membership in BRICS.

The document is based on the 1985 agreement on creating a coordination joint committee, 2003 MoU on launching bilateral political consultations, and 2009 MoU on setting a strategic dialogue mechanism.
