CAIRO – 16 November 2024: Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has affirmed the need for respecting Somali sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity as he met with European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa Annette Weber on Saturday.
During their meeting at the 15th Sir Bani Yas Forum in the United Arab Emirates, Abdelatty underlined the importance of concerted international efforts to support the Somali government in achieving security, countering terrorism and enforcing the state sovereignty within its territory.
The foreign minister highlighted Egypt’s keenness to ensure stability in Somalia by supporting state institutions.
Meanwhile, the meeting discussed the situation in Sudan and the importance of a ceasefire to reach a comprehensive political solution as well as to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected.
Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's commitment to supporting efforts to quickly achieve a ceasefire, reach a political settlement, and achieve stability in Sudan, ensuring the provision of aid.
They discussed various developments in the African Horn region, given the challenges and escalating tensions in the area.
Egypt has consistently voiced unwavering support for the unity and territorial integrity of Somalia amidst tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia over a deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland, a self-declared state not recognized by Egypt.
The agreement, which allows Ethiopia potential access to the sea in exchange for recognizing Somaliland, has been vehemently opposed by Somalia as an infringement on its sovereign rights.
