Egyptian Gynecologist Arrested for Sharing Patient Information on Social Media
CAIRO - 12 November 2024: The Kafr El-Dawar Prosecution Office in Beheira Governorate recently ordered the detention of Dr. W.S., a gynecologist known in the media as the "Kafr El-Dawar Doctor," for four days pending further investigation.
Authorities have charged her with multiple offenses, including undermining family values in Egyptian society with the intent of disrupting public order, spreading false information that could disturb public peace, and misusing social media platforms.
Security forces detained the gynecologist after she appeared in a video on her personal Facebook account, where she discussed cases of moral misconduct and pregnancies outside of marriage, referencing incidents from her private clinic. The video, which quickly went viral, ignited widespread debate and dominated social media platforms.
Many viewers accused her of breaching patient confidentiality and damaging Egypt's reputation, while Dr. W.S. asserted that she had no intention of defaming anyone or revealing patient secrets. She clarified that her posts aimed to encourage families to monitor their children, particularly to prevent straying from established social and religious values.
The Egyptian Medical Syndicate confirmed it received several complaints against Dr. W.S., accusing her of using social media to defame patients and using inappropriate language, which allegedly violated family values in Egyptian society.
The syndicate forwarded the complaints to the Professional Ethics Committee for further investigation, stressing its disapproval of any individual actions that could harm both patients and the medical profession.
