CAIRO - 12 November 2024: Cairo hosted the second round of political consultations between Egypt and Turkey on African affairs, with a particular focus on the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
The Egyptian delegation was led by Ambassador Ihab Awad, Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs, while the Turkish delegation was headed by Ambassador Elif Ulgen, Director General of the East and North Africa Department at the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
During the talks, both sides exchanged views on the rapid developments in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. They expressed a broad consensus on the need to promote security and stability in the region, which would facilitate the restoration of normal levels of international commercial shipping through the Red Sea.
The two countries agreed to enhance cooperation through various frameworks and channels to achieve their shared objectives in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea. Additionally, they agreed to continue supporting Somalia's efforts in combating terrorism and strengthening the capabilities of the Somali National Army.
Separately, Cairo also hosted the second round of consultations with Turkey on Libya. The Egyptian delegation was led by Ambassador Tarek Dahrouj, Director of the Libya Department at the Foreign Ministry, while the Turkish delegation was again led by Ambassador Elif Ulgen.
These consultations were held in accordance with presidential directives to continue consultations and exchange views between the two countries on Libya, with the aim of serving the interests of the Libyan people.
