Egypt welcomes adoption of its resolution on establishing Nuclear Weapon Free Zone in the Middle East at UNGA first committee

CAIRO- 9 November 2024: Egypt welcomed the adoption of its resolution by an overwhelming majority at UNGA’s 1st Committee to Establish a Nuclear Weapon Free Zone in the Middle East & subject all nuclear facilities to IAEA safeguards. 

 

In his official X, Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman said that “Strong global support to see region free of these abhorrent weapons.”

 

In September 2023, the 68th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s General Conference has adopted by majority a draft resolution proposed by Egypt to apply IAEA safeguards to all nuclear facilities in the Middle East.

 

The draft resolution was adopted with 112 votes in favor and no one against, while nine abstained.
